Application of allelochemicals to agriculture.
نویسنده
چکیده
The study of allelopathy has a long history, and its application to agricultural production has long been anticipated. Recently, researchers have found allelopathic plants that are now used as cover crops, and allelochemicals which may lead to new herbicides. This paper reviews three studies introduced in this symposium, and discusses the possible application of allelopathy to agriculture.

Allelochemicals in the rhizosphere soil of Euphorbia himalayensis.
Weed infestation has been known to cause considerable reductions in crop yields, thereby hindering sustainable agriculture. Many plants in genus Euphorbia affect neighboring plants and other organisms by releasing chemicals into the environment. In view of the serious threat of weeds to agriculture, the allelochemicals of Euphorbia himalayensis and their allelopathic effects were investigated. ...
متن کاملOverview of Research on Allelochemicals
Allelochemicals, otherwise known as the inherent silent tool of self-protection among plants, have witnessed a dramatic increase in research in recent years. The potentials of these allelochemicals becoming new bioactive chemicals useful for more sustainable agriculture and safe food production for humanity have been realized for quite sometime. We have recently started a new project entitled, ...
متن کاملAllelopathy in the management of plant-parasitic nematodes.
There are numerous reports of nematicidal chemicals in crude plant homogenates, leachates, and decomposing residues. These compounds are usually assumed to be secondary metabolites, which serve as chemical defenses against disease and parasites. When such compounds are released into the rhizosphere, they are known as allelochemicals. The possibility exists to exploit allelochemicals for nematod...
متن کاملAntifeedant activity of citrus limonoids against Colorado potato beetle: comparison of aglycones and glucosides
The importance of plant allelochemicals in plantherbivore interactions is well known. Although some of these phytochemicals act as phagostimulants for specific herbivores, the majority of allelochemicals examined appear to function primarily in plant defense, acting as insect antifeedants, growth regulators, and/or toxins (Jermy, 1966; Bernays & Chapman, 1977). As such, these chemicals have gre...
متن کاملComparing impacts of plant extracts and pure allelochemicals and implications for pest control
Many plant extracts or allelochemicals show a broad spectrum of activity against pests and such products have long been touted as attractive alternatives to synthetic chemical pesticides for pest management because they pose little threat to the environment or to human health. The studies available suggest that plant-based materials do affect arthropod pests, vectors and other pathogens, yet on...
